October 20, 2017 - The Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) paid tribute to exceptional volunteers and professionals in the parks and recreation sector at the SPRA Awards Gala on Friday, October 20, 2017, at the Legends Centre, in the City of Warman.

“Through their efforts and skills, these outstanding individuals and community groups have made extraordinary contributions to the parks and recreation sector in Saskatchewan,” said Norm Campbell, Chief Executive Officer of SPRA.

The winners of the 2017 SPRA Awards are:

  • Marion Hougham, Village of Paradise Hill – Volunteer of the Year Award 
  • Calvin Bruneau, City of Warman – Facility Operations Award
  • Elli Neb, City of Regina – Fitness Leadership Award
  • LeRoy Community Centre, Town of LeRoy – Cecil Nobes Facility Award of Excellence
  • Sandra Schmirler Olympic Gold Park, Town of Biggar – Parks and Open Spaces Award
  • Paradise Hill Community Centre, Village of Paradise Hill – Community Achievement Award

Each recipient received a commemorative plaque and had their achievements shared with attendees during the Awards Gala.

In addition to these award winners, SPRA recognized the recipients of the 2017 SPRA Scholarship Program. 

This year’s scholarship recipients are:

  • Tiffany Wharton – College of Kinesiology, University of Saskatchewan
  • Nathan Legg – Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies, University of Regina
  • Nicole Poncelet – Saskatchewan Polytechnic

The SPRA Scholarship Program supports individuals pursuing careers in recreation by awarding scholarships of $1,500 to students enrolled in Recreation and Leisure Programs in Saskatchewan.

Recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievement and demonstrated involvement as a volunteer in recreation, parks or leisure services.

About Us

The Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) is a non-profit member-based organization whose purpose is to promote, develop and facilitate parks and recreation opportunities throughout the province. We are recognized as the provincial umbrella organization representing parks and recreation in Saskatchewan and manage the Recreation Section of the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture and Recreation.

SPRA allocates funding through the Recreation Section of the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture and Recreation to eligible recreation organizations. There are currently 34 Provincial Recreation Organizations and seven Sport, Culture and Recreation Districts on the Minister’s Eligibility List. This funding supports these Members with the delivery of quality recreation experiences throughout the province.
