October 18, 2019 – Recreation professionals and volunteers received awards from the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) at the Don Ross Centre in North Battleford, from 6:00-9:00 p.m. on Friday October 18, 2019. These awards are delivered in recognition of their significant contributions to community parks and recreation.  

2019 SPRA Award Winners

  • Lifetime Achievement Award – Clive Craig, Yorkton
  • President’s Award of Distinction – Anne Weisgerber, Swift Current
  • Cecil Nobes Facility Award of Excellence – Spruce Haven Recreation Park, Melfort
  • Facility Operations Award – Kevin Roberts, La Ronge
  • Parks and Open Space Award – Carrot River Community Square, Carrot River
  • Community Achievement Award – Burstall Community Hall Commission Group, Burstall
  • Award of Merit – Dean Robson, Swift Current
  • Fitness Leadership Award – Beatrice Songer, Central Butte
  • Volunteer of the Year (Awarded Posthumously) – Colleen Kearns, Foam Lake

Norm Campbell, who retired in 2018 as the Chief Executive Officer of SPRA, will receive a President’s Award of Distinction from the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association (CPRA).  

2019 Communities in Bloom Award Winners

The winners of the Saskatchewan’s 2019 Communities in Bloom program will receive awards at the Gala. The winners are:

  • Wolseley – for collaboration between town council and volunteers
  • Preeceville – for the Nature Trail near Annie Laurie Lake
  • Outlook – for the Highway 4 Way-Stop Greenspace
  • Nipawin – for Green Spaces and Parks

2019 SPRA Scholarship Recipients

Three students received $1500 scholarships from SPRA due to their academic achievement and volunteerism in recreation:

  • Courtney Saboe – Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Recreation and Community Development
  • Benjamin Berger – University of Regina, Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies
  • Maija Kuan – University of Saskatchewan, College of Kinesiology
