News & Events

March 27, 2020

The health and wellbeing of individuals and communities is at the center of what we do. We believe it is essential to take measures that reduce the potential spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) has closed its offices to the public, and Resource Centre services have been temporarily suspended until further notice. As the situation surrounding COVID-19 rapidly changes, we will continue to adjust our approach as needed. To stay informed, we recommend you like and follow us on Facebook, or check the SPRA website regularly for updates.

We will continue to monitor this situation and do our best to help you stay informed and aware when choosing to offer fitness courses in the current COVID-19 environment.

CPR/FA Certification Expiry Date Extended

We understand that some of you may need to postpone your annual CPR/First Aid renewals.

All CPR/FA certifications which would have expired March through June 30, 2020, will be considered valid 90-days beyond their expiry date. This will be re-evaluated as needed.

If you are currently registered for a class, please contact your CPR provider directly to inquire about rescheduling.

To support training during this time, participants looking to complete first aid re-certification or full courses may complete the online component of a Blended Learning program if offered by your service provider. By completing the online component now, once the in-class courses resume, it will reduce the time required for the in-class skills component.

CPR/FA Policy Reminder

SPRA Policy states that your CPR/FA Certificate must be current and within two years from date of issue if you are still practicing or delivering fitness classes.

For example: If your CPR/FA Certificate date of issue is March 1, 2018, then your certificate is valid with SPRA until March 1, 2020.

This may vary from the CPR provider date on your certificate. The expiry date extension stated above will extend this by 90 days.

Requirements for Online Training

We are aware that some Fitness Leaders want to continue to support their classes via an online option.

The following information has been recommended in consultation with SPRA's insurance provider HUB International and the National Fitness Leadership Association (NFLA):

  • If classes continue and you are found negligent in someone developing COVID-19, this may be excluded in your insurance coverage as it could be deemed an intentional act which is excluded within the policy.

  • With respect to providing services online, Fitness Leaders may choose to provide online instruction, but insurers cap online instruction to 10% of the individual's operations. Meaning the gross revenue received from online operations cannot exceed 10% of the individual's total gross revenue for the policy term.

  • However, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, insurers are allowing online instruction for up to 25% of operations but only for a period of 6 months. The onus is on Fitness Leaders to notify HUB Insurance if their online operations exceed 10%.

  • These requests will have to be referred to insurers by HUB International, and upon review, the insurer will quote and charge an additional premium then an endorsement will be issued. Any of these requests should be emailed to TOS.Team-FitnessLeaders@hubinternational.com directly.

  • You must continue to ensure the PAR-Q+ is completed. The PAR-Q+ online form is the best option. You can complete it online, save the "directive" page, and have it emailed back to you.

Music copyright and license rules should also be observed.

Moving Forward as a Fitness Community

Please follow the Government of Saskatchewan's protocols regarding COVID-19, and contact your local facility for up-to-date and accurate information on how they are proceeding.

We care deeply about the impact the current COVID-19 crisis is having on the fitness community. We know that you will find creative ways to continue to stay mentally and physically healthy, and we are available to support you.

If you have any questions or inquiries, please contact Wendy McKellar, SPRA Physical Activity and Fitness Consultant, at wmckellar@spra.sk.ca.

Thank you for your understanding.

Yours in wellness,

SPRA's Fitness Team.
